About us

How did it all began?

Following a long history of individual cultural and social programmes developed through their respective charity organisations, the famous rock singer of Romanian origin, Peter Maffay, and the reputable businessman, Michael Schmidt, owner of MHS Holding & president of M&V Schmidt Foundation, have decided in 2012 to maximise the synergies between the various associations active in the Oat Country.

This is how Haferland Week was born, as an annual event meant to promote cultural heritage and revitalise local traditions.

If at its first edition, the festival brought together several hundred participants, most of them Saxons returned to their native lands during the summer, in the following years the number of participants doubled. The festival has been attended so far by over 18.000 Saxon visitors, but also members of local communities, as well as Romanian and foreign tourists attracted by the beauty of the landscapes and the stories related to the traditions and customs of these places.
