Haferland Week
Every year in midsummer, the Haferland Week takes place for three to seven days. It is the largest event in Romania dedicated to promoting the culture and traditions of the Transylvanian Saxon community.
The 12th edition of the festival will take place this year from 8 to 11 August 2024 in ten locations: Archita, Saschiz, Homorod, Rupea, Criț, Roadeș, Meșendorf, Klosdorf/Cloașterf, Bunești and Viscri.
The theme chosen for this issue is “History, tradition and culture. Yesterday and today in the Haferland” and reflects an anniversary of great importance for the history of the Transylvanian Saxons: the 700th anniversary of the first documentary mention of Rupea Fortress, one of the most beautiful and largest medieval fortifications in Transylvania, which will take place on Sunday, 11 August 2024 in Rupea itself.
The Haferland Week 2024 is under the High Patronage of His Serene Highness Prince Philipp von und zu Liechtenstein, a member of the Princely House that has headed this state for over 200 years.
For the first time, the festival will also take place under the auspices of the Royal Family of Romania.
Also, for the first time, the festival has entered a partnership with The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Romania, an organisation that offers a global programme for young people between the ages of 14 and 24.
This year’s festival is expected to attract around 10,000 visitors from Romania, but also from countries such as Germany, Austria, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
We have prepared a series of special events for guests of all ages so that all participants will feel part of the Saxon community during the four days of the festival – with visits to fortified churches and traditional Saxon farms, concerts and traditional Saxon music dances, organ concerts, folk dance performances, film screenings, public lectures, exhibitions of traditional crafts and costumes, workshops for children and adults, guided tours, visits to farms and homes, organic food tastings and much more. Admission to all festival events is free.
The Haferland Week offers a unique opportunity to meet the rural culture of the Transylvanian Saxons, which is still preserved in the villages between Sibiu, Brașov, and Sighișoara. As a result, Haferland has retained its rural character unchanged and attracts thousands of tourists every year who visit and stay on traditional Saxon farms.
